About Condensed Matter

Madison, the state capital, is located in south central Wisconsin, 140 miles north of Chicago, 90 miles west of Milwaukee, and 275 miles southeast of Minneapolis. Downtown Madison is on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. The University of Wisconsin abuts downtown and Lake Mendota.

Air Travel

Madison is served by the Dane County Regional Airport, located 5 miles northeast of the UW campus. This ten-gate airport has jet service to major connecting hub cities such as Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Cincinnati

Driving

  • Take I-90 West to Madison. The Madison exit is Exit 142. (It's a LEFT exit).
  • Take Exit 142 left onto Hwy 12-18 West. This is a local highway (The Beltline) going into Madison.
  • Take the Park St exit, Exit 261B.
  • At the bottom of the ramp, take a right (north) onto Park St. Go about 4 miles through several lights, go under the railroad bridge, and go to University Ave (2nd light after bridge).
  • Turn left on University Avenue (one way street) to get to the Physics Department (Chamberlin Hall) on the corner of Charter Street and University Avenue.

Train Travel

The closest AmTrak stop is in Columbus, WI, a 30 minute drive from Madison.
